Heat Treatments for Steel Bars
Heat treating broadens the spectrum of properties within steel bars. The heat treatment of bars can be performed to improve machinability, increase toughness, improve cold forming characteristics, alter hardness and tensile strength up or down dependent on the desired characteristic and to relieve residual stress as well as improving shearability. At Gerdau MACSTEEL, heat treating of our bars includes:

Annealing
Softens the steel and makes it more workable for shearing, forming and machining.

Normalizing
Refines the internal structure of hot rolled bars. The process gives the bars uniform mechanical properties, better ductility and greater impact loading resistance.

Lamellar Pearlitic Anneal
A heat treatment to optimize the microstructure for machining.

Spheroidize Annealing
Changes the carbide microstructure into globular shapes. This annealing process improves machinability and cold forming of the bars.

Thermal Stress Relieving
Removes residual stresses within the steel, restoring mechanical properties and preventing distortion.
